Being attractive, as we all know, doesn't have too many downsides – particularly when it comes to securing better jobs and a higher income.
But new research suggests it's not that simple.
A study at the University of Colorado suggests that being a looker is actually a disadvantage in some industries – but only if you're a woman.
If appearance is not important to a job, better-looking women are overlooked in favour of their plainer counterparts.
In roles such as manager of research and development, mechanical engineer, director of finance, construction supervisor, hardware salesperson, prison guard and tow-truck driver, being attractive is "highly detrimental", says researcher Stefanie Johnson.
"In every other kind of job, attractive women were preferred. This wasn't the case with men which shows that there is still a double standard when it comes to gender."
Attractive men however had an advantage, and faced no discrimination whatsoever.
Participants in the study had 55 photos of each gender, and were asked to sort them according to their perceived suitability for each particular role.
