The Government is being accused of quietly bringing in new legislation to soften up local council assets for sale, despite public opinion being against it.

The accusation comes from Labour's Auckland issues spokesman Phil Twyford, who says the Government has decided to repeal council's requirement to publicly consult before selling assets.

He argues Local Government Minister Rodney Hide is running a private agenda to make privatisation easier.

Mr Twyford says polls consistently show more than 80 percent of Kiwis oppose privatisation of local government assets.
