The relationship between the government and the Greens will be discussed this week, Prime Minister John Key says.

The Greens, who have 14 MPs in the new Parliament, signed a memorandum of understanding with the government after the 2008 election and they worked together on specific issues like home insulation.

Mr Key says he expects to meet Greens co-leader Metiria Turei on Tuesday for an initial discussion and no decisions will be made before Christmas.

"We need to have a discussion before we get anywhere near a memorandum of understanding," Mr Key said.

He says there might be terms under which the Greens would abstain on confidence votes rather than oppose the Government and that was one of the things that would be tested during the discussions.

What Democracy??? If the Greens don't concern about the demographics of their support they could easily have a zero in the next election.
