The Government is taking notice of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and will soon outline its position on environmental standards for deep sea drilling, Prime Minister John Key says.

The Green Party is calling on the Government to put offshore oil exploration on hold until the exact cause of the catastrophe in the Gulf is identified, and ways are found to prevent the same thing happening elsewhere.

The Government has initiated an oil drilling exploration programme in the deep waters of the Great South Basin off the New Zealand coast, and the Greens say sensitive ecosystems would be damaged if an oil spill occurred there.

The Deepwater Horizon rig in the Gulf exploded on April 20 and since then between 68 million and 150m litres of crude oil has leaked from the ruptured pipe.

"We've certainly been aware of what's been happening overseas and we are monitoring it," Mr Key said today at his post-cabinet press conference.

"There is a recognition from the Government that there is a need for good environmental standards for offshore drilling in our economic zone."

Mr Key said Environment Minister Nick Smith was considering the issue "and I think you'll find in the very foreseeable future he will be outlining his thinking in that area".

Yeah imagine an oil spill in NZ, the cost of cleaning up and the cost on our tourism industry!!! As for horse and cart ideas, apparently It's been speculated that we are eventually going to run out of oil sometime anyway.

Jim do you honestly think New Zealand not contributing oil to the world will cause us all to revert back to horse and carts? We are a small part of this planet which means plenty of other places to explore. Oil consumption will continue if we contribute or not. I'm not saying close down all the rigs, I am saying We shouldn't let anymore here! Protect Our Land and People not our bank accounts.

Jim,I was stating what Key said that he Govt conscious of deep oil drilling,I headed the following, that the big head went ahead and signed the agreement,Thus that there should have been more discussions made before signing as this Brazilian drilling crowd dont have a very good history,so does this not leave our country vulnerable to a disaster. As for wheels and tyres got nothing to do with oil disasters. You can back up your nat buddies but when something does happen you will blame labour for it as you are another dreamer.

johnmillan and Mike. What do you guys suggest, the horse and cart with wooden wheels as tyres are partly made from oil? I remember the drugged out people in the 60's always saying "The end is near". So like most greenies, DO NOTHING, don't take any risks and live with heads in the sand!!!
