Cancer patients who need radiation or chemotherapy treatment should receive it within four weeks under a new health target set by the Government.
Health Minister Tony Ryall says oncology will be added to the list of treatment targets from the middle of this year.
District Health Boards have to do their best to meet the targets and their progress is monitored.
Mr Ryall says four weeks is a "world gold standard" setting which meets a National Party election promise.
Immunisation targets are being updated, also from the middle of the year.
The current target of 95 percent of all two-year-olds completing vaccinations is being changed to 95 percent of all eight-month-olds.
"Children are more likely to complete all immunisations if they begin early," Mr Ryall said on Wednesday.
"They are most vulnerable to infectious diseases like whooping cough and pneumococcal disease between three months and 18 months."
