The Government has signed an $11.76 million deed of settlement with South Island iwi Ngati Koata.

Treaty Negotiations Minister Chris Finlayson says the deed settles all Ngati Koata's treaty claims.

As well as financial redress, the iwi has the opportunity to buy Waimea and Hira forestry land near Nelson.

"The actions of the crown left Ngati Koata without sufficient and suitable lands for their needs, which had serious consequences for their social and cultural wellbeing," Mr Finlayson said on Friday.

Good on you Ngati Koata. They can now get on with things and hopefully this settlement can go some way to help further their aspirations.
