John Key says research shows the most effective way to curb smoking is to increase the price

Mon, 01 Feb 2010 11:17a.m.

The Prime Minister has indicated the Government may raise the excise tax on tobacco to get people off the smoking habit.

A survey out last week found that nearly 50 percent of people would favour a complete ban on tobacco.

John Key says a total ban would be difficult to enforce, and he says research shows the most effective way to curb smoking is to increase the price.

He was asked today if changes to tobacco's excise tax could happen as early as this year's budget.

Mr Key says it is interesting that surveys have shown that even smokers want to see tougher measures to convince people to give up.

I'd hate to be running a dairy if the government goes ahead with this flawed proposition. This proposal is extremely illogical.

smoking is a lifestyle choice. Rasing the taxes wont stop people from smoking. People wont stop smoking until there good and ready. You cant force other peoples choices on to them (and me, I'm a smoker). If anyone trys to tell me to give up, "your harming your body etc etc", Its my body. Might as well raise the tax on fastfood and junk food, theyre just as bad for you.

I think this is a bad idea. I am not a smoker but i no raising the price will increase dairy robberys theft and murder. Smokers will become desprit just like drug addicts which is basicly was they are they will do almost anything for a smoke. Do we not pay enough tax already. Are they trying to make everyone poor and put them on the DPB and all the rich will pay more then they go broke.

Well when did this country turn to a dictatorship? What happened to our freedom of choice? It really irks me when they start going on and on about smoking, just makes me want to light another. To hell with them I will smoke regardless of the price.

im a smoker. and i think its ridiculous that the goverment treats us in this way. we are allowed to smoke, its our choice. get off our backs and go pick on people ur own size. smoking isnt illegal, so why the hell should we put up with the government telling us what to do? they already put food and petrol prices up too high for people to afford. maori party can go to hell and take john with them. they are ruining our lives.

We are contemplating banning smoking, but subsidising stomach stapling operations. Does anyone else see the irony in this? Lots of things kill. Alcohol. Motor vehicles. The carcinogens in the fuel they use. Some of the processed food ingredients we eat. Why not just ban the lot?

Unfortunatly that isn't what happens. Most smokers just pay the extra for smokes and less for the rest of the things they need. As far as i'm conserned (im a smoker) i will still smoke even if they double the price. Its just the way it is. (i can afford too without cost to my children in food clothing etc) And before ya all climb up me for smoking around my children i take precautions to ensure they dont smoke second hand. If this govt was serious about health issues they should have brought out an emmisions trading scheme that encoraged polluters to cut emmisions not 1 that encorages it because they dont have any comeback on them.

Once again a dumb government listening to a small minority group, as lets face it, that survey was a joke. Since when has 50% of the population been 800 odd people. This is just Key pandering to his Maori mates in parliament again. I can see more and more people leaving this Banana Republic.

Think of it the other way around - by giving up you save so much that you will not only be able to pay for better food and clothing but likely have quite a bit left over! And that is already the case at todays prices.
And the added benefit is that when you get old you will not be tripping over the oxygen lines you will require to stay alive for just that little bit longer. Just ask the nurses who go to peoples houses, dealing with this.

Why don't they just ban cigarettes ffs they are the government they have the power to do so, have a referrendum or something, smoking kills and therefore should be banned.
