Grand Designs host Kevin McCloud

Kevin McCloud knows a thing or two about building houses - you've probably seen him on the telly as the host of the British show Grand Designs.

It's the show that follows people on a mission to build their ultimate dream home, or have extraordinary plans like converting old water tanks into a house.

Next month McCloud will make his way down here where he's keen to help New Zealand embark on one of our most important building projects of all time: The re-design of Christchurch.

Europe correspondent Melissa Davies met with him in London.

Every country has its 'layers of history' and it is ignorant cultural cringe to dismiss New Zealand's. We should listen to what McCloud has to say - his experience is not narrowly bound up in English contexts.

Yous guys are lucky if he is willing to come to you he is so much more talented on all construction fronts that are not shown on the TV. Here in england he is respected in all fields of construction and has some good ethos practices in design so lets hoe you give him a go and get to rebuild your and mine favourite city.

It would be great to see him here - but not to talk about the Central City. We need him here to inspire people to rebuild their houses in a more sustainable, eco-friendly way. Jeremy Clarkson calls him an 'eco-mentalist' and that's what we need - not more Mc Mansions.

I watch and like Kevin McLoud's programmes he is innovative and I am sure will bring with him some great ideas. I am sure he will not be copying the UK architecture, why would he?? I say give him a go, think positive, after all we should not be turning down any offers of help!! Be positive.

No thanks. We do not need an expert from England telling us to repair everything as he encourages everyone on his programs. The English are all for preservation which is great for over there. Here we are small Pacific Islands on lots of fault lines. Heavy destructive buildings originated from copying the architecture from England in the first place.
Really, unless you are going to physically help with a pick and shovel (demolition first), then please don't waste your money. Donate it instead.
