A four-month-old baby and his grandfather are due to have surgery for serious burns suffered in a house fire.
The 54-year-old Fijian man has been dubbed a hero by firefighters after he rescued his little grandson from a Timaru home as it erupted in flames on Saturday morning.
Both are stable and doing well in hospital in Christchurch, Sergeant Simon Heeley of Timaru police said on Sunday afternoon.
Their injuries are not life-threatening and after surgery they could be released from hospital in a few days, he told NZ Newswire.
Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire, but Mr Heeley says it is not considered suspicious.
The owner was at church at the time but six relatives visiting from Fiji for a family wedding were in the home when it burst into flames.
