Greenpeace activists broke into the French parliament during a debate on the Copenhagen climate talks.

The activists stormed inside the National Assembly in Paris as French lawmakers were debating the upcoming UN climate summit.

About a dozen activists breached security and deployed several banners inside the hemicycle, reading "Do something Mr President".

The head of the national Assembly immediately suspended the session.

The reaction to the stunt from members of the French parliament was not positive.

"The Greenpeace action is perfectly legitimate and respectful but what they did inside the assembly this afternoon is completely unacceptable," head of the Socialist group, Jean-Marc Ayrault told AP Television.

An MP in French President Nicolas Sarkozy's UMP party disagreed with the combative nature of Greenpeace's actions.

"Greenpeace were obviously looking for a clash, I don't think it's the right way to solve problems," he said.

However, Greenpeace spokeswoman, Adelaide Colin said that it was important to make their point in this way.

She said that they wanted to "make sure that our political representatives get this message which is that Copenhagen must be a success, President Nicolas Sarkozy must act urgently."

Earlier in the day, several activists managed to climb a crane to the top of the French National Assembly with a banner reading "Act Mr. President" before they were stopped by parliamentary security and eventually arrested by the French police.

Greenpeace is urging Sarkozy to make deeper cuts in French emissions as an example to other nations at the Copenhagen talks on fighting global warming, which open next week.

In the run-up to the December 8-17 summit, some environmental groups have stepped up their activism to express support for new targets to limit greenhouse gas emissions that can contribute to global warming.
