The Green Party says New Zealand risks becoming an international laughing stock if it backs out of the Emissions Trading Scheme.

The new National-led government has put the scheme on hold while it reviews the science surrounding climate change, but the Greens say it leaves us sounding like a lone voice in the world.

In Wellington the Green Party hit one of the capital's busiest beaches to show its support to climate change action, saying that the government is burying its head in the sand by deciding to review the scheme.

Today's climate change action coincides with a meeting in Poland where delegates from more than 190 counties are discussing a new deal to limit green house gas emissions.

The deal is to replace the Kyoto Protocol which is due to expire in 2012.

"New Zealand's going to be the only outlier in the developed world," Green co-leader Jeannette Fitzsimons says. "That position is an embarrassment to our image and our reputation."

The Greens say the decision would also put New Zealand at risk of playing Russian roulette with its climate.

The explossion in population is a huge worry Jim, and more countries need to start looking and implementing policies on birth and population control, we are 3 billion people over the capacity of this planet.

But, we aren't at the end of mankind on this planet yet. There is much help here now, and much more coming, we just have to reach out our hands and accept that help.

Dave, we hit the Greens because they have not offered any alternatives except to ROB us of our hard earned dollars. As for bringing the population into it, let us see, how is the ETS bill going to clothe, house & feed these growing masses. You have also, I noticed, given no alternatives except to agree with the greens for some cause that is not clear to alot of people. Passing money around and getting carbon credits is not going to feed etc the growing population. I agree, there must be alternatives found or the conequence is that the ever-growing population is going to be the end of human (and most animals) existance on the planet!!!

Yip the Greens are experts at being embarrasments. The last ten years the earths temp has remained the same and climate readings say the last three years it has actually gone down. the greens go with the readings that come from built up areas that 20 years ago were out in the country but are now in the concrete jungle which is much hotter than open country. Who is giving false arguments the fors or againsts.

LMAO, business people generally come on here to throw stones at the green party, it seems easier than actually using their brains.

Since the 60's and 70's the worlds population has almost doubled, in fact while the population has grown substantially the number of tree's has decreased exponentially.

Simple maths really more people - trees = poorer supply of oxygen, higher supply of carbon dioxide.
Now from basic 4th form science we know that carbon dioxide makes climate warmer.

However, business in response to global warming paid their own scientists to say the opposite, and managers, or executives dont like parting with their profits so its cheaper for them to hire scientists that say there is no global warning even though it smacks of hypocracy.

Business has always been quite happy to destroy the environment.

And no that doesnt make me a green supporter, just not stupid enough to fall for the immorality of big business.

New Zealand should be seen as a trendsetter if the government decides to scrap the ETS. It's a major step in the right direction (pun unintended) toward repealing nonsensical legislation written by nonsensical MPs.

the govt has put this badly written legislation on hold while they investigate a better approach to the environment than the absolute waste of time Labour and the greens came up with that was going to push businesses including the back bone of NZ, our farming industry, into bankruptcy.
