The Virgin Mary billboard continues to cause controversy

A group of protesters has gathered outside Auckland's St Matthew-in-the-City Anglican church on Sunday, calling for a controversial Christmas billboard to be taken down.

The billboard, which was vandalised on Saturday, depicts a contemplative Virgin Mary holding a positive pregnancy test.

Catholic Action group spokesman Arthur Skinner told Newstalk ZB that the group is protesting because they believe the image is blasphemous.

Mr Skinner says the image has nothing to do with scripture.

The protesters have a statue of the Virgin Mary with flowers around it, as well as placards.

St Matthew's 2009 billboard also raised the ire of many. That promotion depicted a fresco-styled Mary and Joseph in bed with the tag line: 'Poor Joseph, God was a hard act to follow.'

That billboard was repeatedly vandalised and then removed.
