This article says it best...., http://www.independent.com/news/2013/jan/08/guns-and-safety/#c89059 . An sobering insight into the evolution of police firearms training from a veteran officer. Also how it pertains to gun control and the pro-gun lobbyists smokescreen.

Yeah Grant I've lived in California for 6 years and taught high school in the San Fernando Valley. None of the semantics you mentioned comes close to solving the gun problems in the US. Gun owners immediately get defensive about commonsense firearms safety and start rolling out the other contributing factors as a smokescreen. Two things about your argument...the overwhelming variables in America is the number of guns and the ease of access through unregulated gun shows and internet sales. The US constitutes 5% of the globes population and has 50% of the globes guns....hmmmm? Next point, across the country, there is a huge number of mayors, veteran police staff and a growing majority of the public that want something effective done about the carnage. Take your low power ammunition debate and go talk to the parents of the 20 kids, all shot multiple times in the Newtown massacre? That seems a bit strong as an argument but the feeling here is deeply rooted and people are sick of some of the pro-gun representatives trying to talk around the main points. All the other variables involved such as violent games and crazy people with guns are present in most other countries, but none have to contend with the ease of purchasing firearms and the underlying prevalence of guns in society. Military vets and the police have repeatedly said that there is no coherent reason the public need these types of weapons and/or the 30/50 round mags, clips and strips. Obama is determined to get something done about a festering malignant cancer in America and its about time...Since the Newtown killings, there has been another 400 odd gun related deaths and nationwide, 33 deaths per day is the average....? Rambo type guns are for the military and the movies, not for deranged murderers in real life. The main message to gun owners here is,....no-one wants to take away your hand guns or hunting firearms, but no-one wants the automatic weapons out there when they are made for one reason,to kill people.

Oh Grant come on, as a gun owner dont try to downplay the .223. Doesn't matter if you get shot with a 9mm or a .223. Youre going to get pretty messed up.
