Less than a year after Feilding farmer Scott Guy was killed, his family has gathered to mourn another loss.
Mr Guy's cousin Andy Marshall died two weeks ago in Perth after he was shoved through a window and fell seven metres to the street.
Mr Guy's widow and his sister, whose husband Ewen is charged with Mr Guy's murder, were at Mr Marshall's funeral today.
Mr Marshall and Mr Guy grew up together. They were cousins and they were friends.
Their family is now grieving the loss of both of them.
“Because we love you so much we miss you so much more,” said Mr Marshall's mum Wendy Marshall.
Mr Marshall's family wanted to remember him today, not dwell on his violent death.
“He would be two minutes in the house and everybody would laugh and laugh, it was just the gift of joy he had,” said his father Alan Marshall.
Mr Marshall moved to Perth two years ago to start his OE - finding work there and a band which welcomed the drumming skills he had honed in Christchurch.
Mr Guy's father Bryan Guy read a tribute from Mr Marshall's band mate in Perth.
“The thing I admired most about Andy was his evergreen optimism, he was always the first person to say ‘yes’,” he read.
His last trip home was in February to check on his family after the earthquake. His brother said it showed his caring side - and his competitive nature
“We ended up playing backyard cricket instead of cleaning up,” said brother Benji Marshall.
Mr Marshall will be buried in a private service later this week.
Alan Marshall told 3 News that the only thing that has got the family through the last year has been being united in their grief.
Now they just want life to be normal again.
