The man accused of murdering Feilding farmer Scott Guy is his brother-in-law, Ewan MacDonald.
He made an appearance in the Palmerston North District Court this afternoon. It is an arrest that has not only shocked members of the family, but the wider Feilding community.
Clutching the Anna MacDonald, Kylee Guy and the woman whose husband police say is responsible for the calculated killing of Scott, made their way to court.
“Over the last few months we certainly looked at each other, I guess, and we have all been suspects over these last nine months,” says Scott’s father Bryan Guy.
“But you don’t like to think it’s someone as close as that.”
MacDonald denies responsibility for killing Scott Guy, who was his best man when he married Anna.
At Scott Guy’s funeral, MacDonald was a pallbearer. He was also Scott Guy’s business partner on the family farm.
“There was some rivalry there, especially in the early days. We had family meetings and thought we had sorted all that out,” says Bryan Guy.
Shot more than once in the throat with a shotgun, Scott Guy was found dead at the end of his driveway.
Scott Guy used to manage Alison and Rob Rankin’s farm. They say they can’t believe it’s MacDonald who has been charged with killing him.
“It’s the why,” says Ms Rankin. “It was the ‘who?’ and now it’s the ‘why?’.”
Discovering why is exactly what Bryan Guy is dreading.
“This is much tougher today than when Scott was murdered. On the 8th, that was bad enough, but this is just gut wrenching,” he told reporters outside the court today.
MacDonald is also facing six other charges, which are suppressed.
Bryan Guy says his daughter Anna and the rest of the family still hold hope police are wrong.
“She believes in Ewan. We all believe in Ewan at this stage. She wants to believe Ewan, we all want to believe Ewan,” he says.
Scott and Kylee’s Aorangi home was vandalised in 2009 and in 2008, removal trailers carrying the old farm house were set on fire.
A 21-year-old Feilding man is facing arson and vandalism charges in Queenstown. He has not been charged with Scott Guy’s murder.
Macdonald has been remanded in custody until next month.
