The New Zealand rhythmic gymnastics team are fine tuning their routines ahead of the Commonwealth Games, and they're doing it with competition and training in Italy and Bulgaria.

The three gymnasts are hoping to win New Zealand's first medal in 20 years.

"We're all in the one gym under the same roof with one coach, pushing each other, and know how each other feels," says Kimberley Robson. "It works to our advantage."

Under the tutelage of coach Kathryn Holdsworth , the team is Robson, Mereana Rademakers and Keziah Oliver.

They are all aligned with the Olympia Club in Christchurch.

"We qualified as a team and will compete as individuals - never know what's going to happen," says Oliver.

While a team medal would seem their best chance of success, they are strangely evasive when it comes to their personal targets.

"I haven't really thought about it," says Rademakers. "Maybe getting into an apparatus final?"

Between now and then it's all about fine-tuning their routines and trying to make them mistake-free.

Right now they are in Italy for the World Cup, before going onto Bulgaria for training and more competition.

But Delhi is the priority.

"It's going to be a tough competition," says Oliver.

To illustrate how tough, Kiwis haven't won any Commonwealth Games medals in the sport since Auckland in 1990, when Angela Walker and Raewyn Jack picked up six between them.
