Glenn Mills, the man accused of deliberately infecting people with HIV, has been found dead.
According to the New Zealand Herald a source confirmed his death on the day he was supposed to appear in the Auckland District Court.
Detective Sergeant Andy King from the Adult Sexual Assault Team, who headed the inquiry, said Mills died overnight at Mt Eden prison.
His body was found this morning and no one was being sought in relation to the incident.
Lawyers on the case have refused to comment, but the hearing did not go ahead.
Forty-year-old train driver, Mills is said to have lured vulnerable young men through gay dating websites, pretending he was 32. The allegations have shocked the gay community.
He is also said to have been registered as a "heterosexual seeking women" on dating websites such as nzdating.com and findsomeone.com.
Mills faced 28 charges relating to 14 people and was being held in custody.
The charges included wounding and attempting to wound with reckless disregard as well as infecting and attempting to infect with a disease.
