She's the first ever rock chick, she's was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year and get this, she even dated Elvis.
Now in her 70s, Wanda Jackson sold out the Powerstation in Auckland tonight.
Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley - in the 1950s Wanda Jackson shared a bill with them all when they were starting out.
She stood out not just for her voice like a bandsaw dripping honey but also because she was a “she”.
Wanda was a teen singing country till the king suggested she try rockabilly. The pair dated while on tour in 1955.
She says she was secretly besotted by Elvis.
“I was a teenager so I was swooning with all the other girls, I just wasn't yelling and screaming,” she says.
The fact the venue of her Auckland concert had to be changed twice showing the power of timeless rock and roll to vault the generation gap.
This enduring appeal saw Jack White seek her out to record an Amy Winehouse number. All this for a woman who at 72 says things have never been better.
“This is the brightest my star has shone you can imagine how exciting that is when you're in your 70s to be getting full houses,” she says.
And after seeing her in action you get the feeling the queen of rockabilly isn't quite ready to give up the throne just yet.
