A Hamilton company has issued a public apology after some of the city's residents failed to see the humour in advertising material that told them they were being evicted from their homes.

Generation Homes sent an orange flyer, with "Home Eviction Notice" written on the front, to 15,000 Hamilton properties last week.

The benefits of Generation Homes' home and land packages were explained inside the flyer.

While the flyer generated some interest from potential buyers, Generation Homes' Hamilton director Alana Savage was forced to apologise on Thursday for any offence caused after receiving a number of complaints from residents.

"They were really quite upset by it," Ms Savage told the Waikato Times.

"We've had people leaving messages on our phone really swearing."

Ms Savage said the same campaign was well received when it was run in Auckland recently.

"In fact we sent out a follow-up `Final Eviction Notice', but we won't be doing that [in Hamilton] with the feedback we've had."

Ms Savage said in hindsight the flyer was not suitable to be used in a general mail-out and she apologised for any anguish the "quirky advert" may have caused.
