Water supply in Hamilton is slowly returning to normal after a lightning storm last night damaged the plant which provides water for the city.

The storm disrupted the Peacockes Road water treatment plant – Hamilton’s source for fresh water – as well as computers and alarms nearby.

While engineers have been working on the problem, many residents have had little or no water for several hours.

"Water supplies are all back on line, but there may be some minor water quality issues," says Tim Harty, manager of City Waters.

Mr Harty advises people to run their taps to clear pipes before using the water.
