Hamish McKay on Sonny Bill Williams

It was one of those observations from around the periphery, if you like, that one gets to make when in the privileged position of sitting in the best seat in the house as a Commentator.

I am referring to how the All Black players who didn't have a major hand in the actual final or the tournament overall were celebrating.

In that respect Jimmy Cowan was an absolute champion. Any personal disappointment he had every right to harbour was pushed aside as he joined in with his team mates and celebrated the fact that he had been part of this from the outset in 2008.

Corey Flynn was surplus to requirements bar the seven minutes he had on the field. But with the winning bonus of $100,000 about to hit his bank account he too had plenty to cheer about.

Then there was Sonny Bill Williams.

Sonny really is the ultimate box of chocolates, which one you're going to get is always a bit of a mystery.

But one thing is for sure - the more Sonny is the centre of attention the happier he is. When he was the starting wing for the quarter final against Argentina you could be forgiven for thinking Sonny was completely dedicated to seeing out his playing days in New Zealand. Then came his cameos in the semi and final followed by his no show at the various All Black parades around the country.

Sure we have no reason to doubt his reasons for not fronting. It's personal and pretty much nobody's business.

But is there more than meets the eye on this? I think so.

I totally agree that SBW has the right to put his family first, isn't that what anyone would do?? I would do the same thing if I'm in his shoe. Come on we all know he's a terrific player!!!!

As far as I am aware there are 15 men in the game of rugby and are specialists in their positions-one man alone cannot win the game. Is SBW a noter and likes all the publicity in the world to fill his bank account? Where do the funds come from to fill their bank accounts - too right "Joe & Jean" Public so as far as I see it would not have taken too much to allow the public to interact with this player in the parades. I don't think too much to ask unless a priority or emergency situation arises.
Looking from a distance to see where this all leads to???

SBW has every right to put his family first before the public. He is paid based on his skill in the game and his personal fitness. Its SBW personal fitness and unorthodox skill which make him what he is and why fans want to come nd watch him play. SBW had these skills well before switching over to the 15 aside kick & clap game. And with the amount of players approaching their use-by date, I think SBW will be a regular mid-fielder in years to come. The rugby union fraternity need to feel privaleged if SBW sticks around and continues to play rugby union for NZ. If the NZRU think they can manipulate him by stalling contract negotiations, then he will follow where the highest bidder is gonna pay. He has paid back his dues in rugby league. Give him the chance to pay the NZ public back in rugby union and give him a chance to be a kiwi. Putting family first.

SBW a very good player,I am sure the NZ Rugby are switched on enough, so if he is playing mind games, not a worry, NZ has so many top players we wont miss him. In defence of your comments, I think some of the above posted comments the writers have the common ailment of "politically correct" and are too sensitive.

Who gives a damn what SBW is doing, wouldn't worry me to see him get the hell out of NZ and go join his 2 air headed mates Mundine and Kofer. They will always have a new career as a 3 ringed circus. As for the ones bagging McKay, lets face it he has never been a good sports jounalist, he is a rader of sports news without doing the research, a bit like most of the sports reporters in this country.

no wonder y u became a journalist, very good in gossiping and creating false intepretations of people's decisions and performance. U don't understand SBW's cultural values and it's so rude for u to judge him in a very wrong time (by his sick granma's side). Doesn't matter how serious his granma's illness was, his values was to prioritise family and we never know what would happen as she is an elderly woman.

Unfortunately SBW now thinks he is bigger than the game of rugby. He has obligations to the people of NZ because we are paying his $100K bonus, his $7K a week camp fees plus other yearly payments he gets from rugby. I feel for the guy having a sick grandmother, but I am sure he could have spared a couple of hours on Monday to greet the fans in Auckland at least. Needs to have a chat to Piri on how to be a professional sportsman at a World Cup, his demeanour was a credit to himself and his family!
