Stepping through the doors of this $2 million Remuera home it’s impossible not to be impressed.

That was the feeling of the judges at this year's House of the Year competition.

They gave the palatial four bedroom home their supreme award.

“It’s such a grand scale that is so rare in New Zealand, to see something that special being built to absolute perfection,” says architectural judge Guy Evans.

Built by Lindesay Construction on a site with 100 protected trees, the four bedroom home boasts harbour views, a luxury pool, a theatre and a wine cellar.

But builder Hamish Craig says despite the added extras it's a very classical home.

“It’s been designed to provide this lovely tranquial area between the different areas of the house and you can open the whole house and on a still day like this, it’s just gorgeous,” he says.

A feature that sets the single storey home apart is the timber – 15 different types were used in its construction, all of them chemical free.

“The level of skills it takes to put these houses together is a dying trade. It’s very, very hard to find builders these days that can do this level of workmanship, it is literally handbuilt,” says Lindesay Construction’s Philip Lindesay.

The title's the second house of the year award for Lindesay Construction after winning in 2008 - but Craig says a trophy and a title aren't the greatest satisfaction.

“The major achievement is our clients love their home, and we've managed to get everything that was on their wishlist,” he says.

And it's now a home that's probably on the wish list of everyone who just watched this story.
