Facing the world number one, 28-year-old Daniela Hantuchova relied on experience to bring high flying Caroline Wozniacki, eight years her junior, back down to earth.
Despite topping the rankings, Wozniacki is yet to win a slam, and didn't look capable of changing that error after error leading to a 6-1 first set loss.
The Dane began the second in similar style. For much of the match, Hantuchova was putting on a clinic.
Wozniacki broke back and the second set was poised at 4-3, but the top seed relinquished momentum as unforced errors crept back into her game.
Hantuchova winning 6-1, 6-3, and progressing to the fourth round.
Elsewhere, last years finalist Sam Stosur's dream of going one better was dashed by Argentina's Gisela Dulko. The Australian took out the second set but was outclassed in the third losing 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
In the men’s draw Roger Federer made light work of Serbia's Janko Tipsaravich. Federer cruising to a 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 victory.
Man of the moment Novak Djokovic's incredible run of 41 games unbeaten could be in jeopardy, the Serb was made to work on his way to taking the first set 6-3 against former US Open champion Juan Martine del Potro.
Returning from injury, del Potro rallied in the second, his thunderous serve too much for Djokovic.
The match was adjourned for bad light at the end of the second set, they resume tonight with the score locked at 6-3, 3-6.
