Happy Feet and his doppelganger

Happy Feet and his doppelganger

Stranded Emperor penguin Happy Feet has a brand new container for his trip back to the subantarctic – and a brand new toy to keep him amused while he waits.

Happy Feet is due to return home on August 29, heading south on a NIWA research vessel, so construction has begun on a special travel enclosure where he will spend around four days before being released down the back ramp of the vessel.

The enclosure will be large enough for the penguin to stand, lift his beak, and turn around in.

But something else caught Happy Feet's attention yesterday - his own reflection.

Two mirrors have been installed in his Wellington Zoo enclosure for mental stimulation.

Yesterday, the zoo put in the second, and since then, Happy Feet has spent most of the day looking at himself.

Turns out he prefers the full-length mirror.

Vets say the mirrors are good for honing his social skills, which he'll need back with his own kind in Antarctica.

Is there a site where we can track Happy Feet via his attached GPS?

We can only hope that the initiation back into the wild of the 'Antarctic' will be an easy and kind transformation for this young fella... after this period of association with mans hospitality naturally he will have lost an edge on his survival skills. Does he still know how to catch food and actually devour it himself rather than being forced feed? Anyways God Speed Happy Feet.....

Who makes these decisions. Look how popular this little guy has become and just think what an attraction to Wellington he would be. Odds are he'll probably perish back in the wild with nobody to care for him. This anti Zoo and being seen to do the right thing attitude is daft. Anyway our family loves you and all the best, Happy Feet. We'll miss you!

Really concerned for Happy Feet when he is released. He is loved worldwide. Must be a reason for him ending up in New Zealand. Why can't he stay at the zoo?
