Happy Feet has probably not been eaten

A penguin expert says it’s unlikely lost emperor penguin Happy Feet has been eaten by a predator.

Happy Feet’s tracking device stopped transmitting several days ago, but Massey University Associate Professor John Cockrem says it’s highly likely the bird is still alive.

“Of the natural predators, leopard seals would be far further south, around the Antarctic continent, at this time,” he says.

“I also think the chances of meeting an orca are pretty small.”

Dr Cockrem says the most likely scenario is that the transmitter has fallen off, and over time Happy Feet will “slowly make his way back to Antarctica”.

Hopefully the bird is indeed still alive. However, I can't but think it was a bit reckless to release a convalescing bird 2,625 km from his intended destination. The implication is that he'll need about 170 days to reach it, at the average rate he is swimming so far. Very questionable that he'd make it. I understand that those writing his progress reports have to keep it nice with comments like 'maybe he is chasing ladies' or 'maybe it was time to feed'. Truth be told, at least from my perspective, if they went to all the trouble of arranging for a ship to take him out, they could well have traveled a couple of more days and release him closer to his destination. From what we saw in the video, the seas were not all that rough. Lets hope for the best but.... there are enough reasons to expect the worst. The thing is that we'll probably never know.
