Maori Party MP Hone Harawira laid out his bottom lines on the foreshore and seabed at Waitangi today, challenging the Government to hand full title to Maori while ensuring full access to all New Zealanders.

Prime Minister John Key yesterday said he thought an "elegant" solution could be found, but he warned Maori not to expect too much.

But Mr Harawira told a hikoi at the whare runanga (meeting house) at the Treaty Grounds that people should have the highest aspirations and demands.

"When the politicians say we should be realistic, that's their way of saying 'no'," Mr Harawira said.

Mr Harawira said he had three key principles he wanted in any repeal of the Foreshore and Seabed Act 2004, which angered many Maori and led to the formation of the Maori Party.

"One, Maori title of the foreshore and seabed," he said.

"Two, in case anyone is scared we will sell it, make it (title) inalieanable.

"Three, full access to all New Zealanders forever."

Mr Harawira said Maori title was the only way to end the anxiety and angst felt by Maori when the foreshore and seabed was taken into Crown ownership.

He said making the title inalienable would ensure it "can't be lost to overseas people buying up big chunks of it".

Mr Harawira said the only time access would be denied would be if a rahui, or temporary ban, was placed on part of it, something done usually for tangi or to protect seafood.

"But when there is a rahui on it's not just Pakeha that cant go and fish, it's Maori as well," he said.

Mr Key this morning said he was hopeful a resolution on the foreshore and seabed issue could be reached.

He said there was widespread consensus at an Iwi Leaders Forum yesterday and that only one or two iwi didn't support the solution the Government was proposing.

Labour leader Phil Goff said nobody knew what was being negotiated as most discussions were behind closed doors.

He re-stated Labour's position that the current foreshore legislation worked well.

Mr Harawira was marching at a hikoi in support of the tino rangatiratanga flag.

The hikoi of about 150 people held the flag at the base of the Treaty Grounds flagstaff, where it is not flying, before taking it to the whare runanga.

Mr Harawira said getting the tino rangatiratanga flag raised on the flagstaff with the other four flags present "may not happen overnight, but it will happen".

This is return to the stone age culture that was the highest achievement these people optained less than 200 years ago. The concept of rights for all is not something that was common when cannibalism and slavery where the norm.

I probably didn’t need to give you the sarcasm. My point is that Hone is a typical loud mouth politician (like the others 123 in there) and loves to spout out things that cause controversy.
In reality I believe that most Maori have little interest in this and if they did, would know that most of it will be creamed off by those “in the know” and the normal people will see none!!!

Hoani needs to shut his big fat oxygen theiving pie hole and get his waste of time ass out of parliament. The foreshore belongs to all new zealander's maori and pakeha combined. I can see it now... Free access to all but only certain nominated people will be allowed to collect seafood or recreational fishing in local waters. then watch our food stocks will really be as he calls it "raped and pillaged" under maori watch. And as for permits obtained from maori elders for IWI collecting large quantities of shell fish for certain events.. this needs to be abolished as it is so commonly abused by the so called people that apply for it (black market sales of seafood).Jan you need to get your one sided, one tracked head out of the clouds. Instead of wasting your time promoting your beliefs, perhaps you could be out there helping the cuzzy bro's and lazy ass pakeha raping and pillaging our country's benefit system get back into doing something useful and not being a burden on the rest of us !!!

Hone says that if Maori are given full title to the foreshore and seabed that he New Zealanders will be given full accerss forever. What he dsoen't say is if New Zealanders will have to pay for the privelege of full access.

Totally agree with ngati oz! Time to get over it all and move on. Most Maori also agree it is time to move on! It is just a select group of them that are being fanatics and trying to screw the government for extra money and power by using the Treaty as an excuse for everything. Its time for the NZ Government to grow a pair and say enough is enough we are all NZ's and we will all be treated equally because this racist situation has gotten out of hand. And Jan sorry but convicts were not brought to NZ, just to Australia. The European settlers that settled here were just normal people. Peace :-)
