A frustrated Hone Harawira called out Transport Minister Steven Joyce today over the Rena, joking that the minister should end up in the gallows.

Around 350 tonnes of oil have spilled from the ship since its grounding on the Astrolabe Reef, off the Tauranga coast, a fortnight ago.

The ship's captain and navigation officer reappeared in Tauranga District Court on Wednesday, charged under the Maritime Act with "operating a vessel in a mannercausing unnecessary danger or risk".

The charge carries a maximum penalty of $10,000 fine or 12 months' prison and officials say more charges may follow.

Mana Party leader Mr Harawira wants a strong punishment for the Rena's captain.

"Hanging the poor bugger might sound a bit harsh, but somebody should pay," he said.

"Maybe we can send the Rena captain home with a stern warning and put [Transport Minister] Steven Joyce up on the gallows in his place."

Meanwhile, Mr Harawira says the government should give "a gold medal" to anti-oil drilling protester Elvis Teddy, who also appeared in Tauranga District Court on Wednesday.

Teddy, 44, was the captain of the fishing vessel San Pietro who was arrested amid protests against Petrobras ship Orient Explorer off the East Cape in April.

He faces the same Maritime Act charge as the Rena pair for allegedly breaching the Orient Explorer's exclusion zone.

@Under the Micro Scope... sorry mate. You're not a visitor either. Your low level of literacy would disqualify you from being a journalist as well. These patsy postings pretending to be horrified overseas visitors is getting pretty tiresome and so easy to spot. You use of terms such as "retard" mark you as one of the constant commentators who are Treaty junkies. You don't seem to know much at all about Black and Indigenous American issues and development or you wouldn't make the stupid Treaty comments. One of the greatest obstacle to Maori success is the newly invented Treaty Partnership idea. It will prove to be probably the greatest obstacle to success for NZ race relations and Maori development. No modern country could ever be built on any system which has two ethnic groups juggling co-management of everything in the land. Dumb! It couldn't be dumber or less likely to achieve anything positive for anyone. Stop and think about it for one minute. It might take you a bit longer than others to see why it would drown the country in conflicts of interest and inequalities. Now add in the even less smart idea of Maori veto over any issue and you get an even clearer idea of how far down the gurgler we're headed with the partnership concept!!!

@Under the Microscope. 6 weeks wow. I'm sorry mate, but you have missed most of the racial hatred that comes out of this idiots mouth. Learn a bit more about the treaty before running off at the mouth. It was a 1 page document that has been turned into a 32 Volume set by greedy lawyers and PC Politicians. We all know your Race record in the Good Ole USA, still thousnads of Black people without homes down south after the hurricanes. Now we all know if that had been a white area, new housing would have been built straightaway. But Oh I forgot, the USA is such a perfect country, who go around the world killing people for their own purpose, but now it's coming back to bight you in the arse, and we see a country now failing in all area's. And yes I visited your country for 5 weeks and vowed never to return.

@ RWC Visitor, I too am a tourist from the US and have been in NZ for 4 weeks. I've since learnt that there was a treaty signed between to nations back in 1840, Maori and The Crown of England. When trying to measure where could I confidently mark a point on the race relations scale here in NZ between the two distant treaty partners, its obvious to me that NZ is stunted and retards to a point where America had its racial issues address post Sister Roser era some 20 odd years ago. Maori shouldn't have too put up with the perpetual abuse that its treaty partner inflicts on them; I see it and many of my journalist colleagues see it as well. I the US can elect a black American to be President a Maori Prime Minister/President is not too far from reach also. Do work on your racial issues NZ ... do what we did/do ... eliminate the rogue elements of racial disharmony within allowing democracy to flourish and prosper.

Thanks Hone. You've said what we're all feeling. We're not wanting anyone to hang for this disaster, but the captain and Steven Joyce should probably get a jolly good and public old-fashioned spanking.

If "RWC Visitor was an English visitor he would appreciate that the "democratic society" he speaks of was fought for by the commoners in England for decades and achieved by the signing of the Magna Carta and the establishment of the Westminister system of justic (Jury trials and presumtion of innocence) just so MPs could not hang you or depart you prior to a fair trial. The racist comment is immaterial. Therefore this poster is a deluded NZer obviously with little grasp of what this little storm is all about, could be called deluded in fact. However Hone has the right to free speech but he needs to use the freedom wisely.

RWC Visitor has to be a deluded kiwi as not even in england would they tolerate their MPs calling for accused people to be hung prior to court.

A message for Hone and the anti drilling brigade, unfortunately we need oil for the car he drives around his electorate and the flights he takes to Wellington- are we going to see him revert to horse transport!
Even the protestor was burning marine diesel on his fishing vessel. As a country we need to export our dairy and timber products and those vessels need fuel.
The enquiry will show that there was a navigational error on the "Rena" , unfortunately caused by human error.
You can have all the rules in the world but there is always this possibility.
I agree with some of the criticsism of Maritime NZ that they were slow to act, but the majority there are paper pushers not practical mariners, these have recently been replaced by ex police , so they are well equipped now to criminalise the poorly paid mariners on flags of convenience and also our own mariners.
