A pair of brazen thieves who stole a charity donation box from a Hastings petrol station were caught on camera, and police hope they'll be able to track him down.

Police have released security camera footage showing the duo approach the counter of the service station on Heretaunga St on January 11 and ask for a pack of cigarettes.

As the attendant turned to get the cigarettes, one of the pair snatched the Riding for the Disabled donation box from the counter and stuffed it in his hoodie.

He then stood behind his accomplice, whose sex is not clear from the footage, and continued to adjust his hoodie while the accomplice completed the purchase, before the pair left the store.

Hawke's Bay tactical co-ordinator Inspector Andy Sloan called the theft "the lowest of the low".

"You can't go much lower than that and these people obviously have no scruples or morals whatsoever. Apart from depriving a worthy charity of useful donations, they have no qualms about committing a theft in broad daylight, in public and with other people nearby," he said.

It was not known how much money was in the donation box.
