The Hastings Fire Service is battling a large warehouse blaze tonight.

Shift commander Murray Dunbar says they received a call after 8pm alerting them to the fire, which has only grown despite 11 trucks and 60 firefighters being on the scene.

He says they will be battling the blaze well into the night.

The warehouse is occupied by Hawk Packaging Ltd, on Tomoana Road.

Mr Dunbar says at this stage the cause of the fire cannot be determined and will be left to the Fire Service investigation.

We stay across town and it lit the night sky an eerie orange.. as alot of others did we went to see it closer..the smoke cloud was at least a km high and embers were still burning while being forced up higher then the cloud of smoke. I was up bout 6 this morning and the smoke cloud is still there just as full as it was last night. Last year there was a smaller fire at the packaging plant but nothing like this one..

This is a major fire on a premises where thousands of fruit-picking crates are stored and which they're currently struggling to contain. It may well spread to the Mr Apple coolstore next door. The one good thing is there's no wind, otherwise it would definitely be spreading already.
