Hawke's Bay residents hoping for a sleep-in may have had a rude awakening with an earthquake on Sunday morning.

The 4.3 magnitude quake hit offshore, about 60km southeast of Wairoa, at 9.39am.

It measured 40 kilometres deep and GNS Science says it was probably felt east of Wairoa.
