Flooding has closed State Highway 1 between Taupo and Turangi
After heavy rains in the South Island, the North Island is getting its share of wet weather too, with flooding and slips in many places.
The heavy rain in the central North Island has already caused schools and roads to close due to flooding and slips.
Two primary schools in the Ruapehu District have been evacuated this morning as roads surrounding Maitere and Ohura schools are flooded, and others have had slips.
Ruapehu District Council advises locals to minimise travel in the area and to report any flooding of rivers or roads to the council. People should contact police if anyone is in danger.
Waikato Regional Council is warning the area could face a once-in-20-years flood.
The area around the Waipa River is being monitored and farmers nearby have been warned to move stock to higher ground in case of flooding.
The Whanganui River is also likely to flood as the water rises, Newstalk ZB reports.
The weather has also caused delays in the rescue of an injured tramper in the Tararua Ranges near Levin. A helicopter tried to reach him but had to turn back.
A heavy rain warning was issued by MetService this morning which predicted strong to gale northerly winds and heavy rain in the lower North Island.
Rain was expected to continue this morning in Taranaki and the Tararua Ranges, and last into the afternoon in the North Island hill country. The Bay of Plenty Ranges are expected to have rain until tonight, with up to 120mm possible.
Over the weekend South Island areas including the West Coast, Murchison, Nelson and Golden Bay were hit with similar heavy rain which is now easing.
Some South Island roads are still closed due to slips and flooding.
Police are warning drivers around the country to take care on the roads at this time.
