Former New Zealand prime minister Helen Clark has been ranked 34th in the latest list of the world's most powerful women, compiled by Forbes magazine.

Ms Clark, who heads the United Nations Development Programme, is ranked ahead of author J K Rowling (78), Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour (51) and actress Angelina Jolie (66).

Ms Clark is also ranked one place ahead of Australian mining magnate Gina Rinehart.

At the top of the list is German chancellor Angela Merkel, followed by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Meanwhile, pop star Beyonce Knowles is ranked 32nd, while the youngest woman on the list, 26-year-old Lady Gaga, is 14th.

Ms Clark was ranked 50th on the list in 2011.

Ohhh Alison, seems you are fighting for Helen's affections there, H2 will be after you in a jealous rage, you have been warned!
No mention Alison I see about her throwing toys out the pram and running away after election defeat (leaving Mt Albert voters speechless) and having no succession regime in place, hence the disarray still within the party, but she's a woman and good on her though eh? (she'll be pissed though, going from #1 woman in NZ to only 34th in the world, more work to be done I'd say!)

Welldone Helen. Unlike others posting on here I am proud another kiwi is achieving high things overseas. It amazes me how shortsighted people can be and I remember the policies for children that helped many whilst you were our PM when no other had vision. You are a truly remarkable woman and may you continue to make us all proud.

Just leave it/her where she is, as we have seen what she is about, and we don't need her here in NZ that is for sure.

That must be very pleasing for Helen to hear. Bet John Keys wouldn't get anywhere near there in the mens list.
