A search and rescue operation is underway near Invercargill after a helicopter was reported missing this afternoon.

The Robinson Helicopter was due around 2.15pm in the Awarua area.

It is believed there are two people on board.

Police and the Rescue Co-ordination Centre New Zealand have begun a search and rescue operation.

Three helicopters and a fixed wing plane are involved in the search.
