The SPCA and Auckland Council are working together to help owners and pets separated in yesterday’s storm, but say they don’t believe it is a big problem.

Five dogs and two cats are being looked after at the council’s west Auckland shelter, either after being found wandering or because their owners are staying in temporary accommodation and can’t look after them.

The SPCA says it has been asked to help find shelter for one man’s dogs, and has had several calls about missing cats.

A council spokeswoman says animal control officers are on standby to help people who had to leave their pets behind when they were evacuated.

“As the cordons get lifted people will be able to go and look for their animals and we’ll be able to assist people with finding them,” she says.

Anyone missing a pet or who finds a lost animal is asked to call the Auckland Council on 09 301 0101.

Depends on where they are staying. If they are in a motel or the likes they may not be allowed pets.

Why would pets be left behind during an evacuation? If I had to evacuate I would be taking my pets with me.
