The high price of vegetables is having an unexpected effect – consumers are turning more and more to home-grown vegetables.

High produce prices in supermarkets and grocery stores have inspired sales spikes in vegetable seeds, plants and gardening supplies, garden supplies chain Mitre 10 says.

Seed sales alone have risen 45 percent in the last year, with lettuce and broccoli the most popular choices.

Mitre 10 General Manager Marketing Dave Elliott says for some people the high prices mean “growing your own vegetables is no longer a choice but a necessity”.

“There was certainly growth in the home-grown vege market last year, but nothing like this.”

Herb sales are also up 30 percent but the highest seller has been strawberries, with 30,000 plants sold in August.
