It was a harrowing ordeal for a 24-year old female hiker who got stuck on the side of a California cliff and had to be rescued by a helicopter.

During a rock climbing adventure in Topanga State Park, the hiker and her male partner realised the climb they embarked on was more dangerous than they thought.

Neither has been named by authorities.

After scaling about 12 metres down the nearly vertical cliff known as "Eagle Rock" the female hiker decided against going further and remained in a seated position for over two hours with one hand grasping the sandstone cliff side.

Her partner was able to climb back up to the top of the cliff, and made a weak makeshift safety line in an attempt to give her something to hang onto.

Lack of cell phone reception kept the two of them in their positions until the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department was notified nearly two hours later.

The Sheriff's Department Air Rescue team immediately flew to the scene, arriving less than an hour before nightfall.

A paramedic on the team hung from a hoist cable beneath the helicopter and was able to make the rescue by putting a safety harness around the hiker's waist.

A Sheriff's Department spokesman said the pitch of the cliff where the hiker was rescued is nearly vertical and 152 metres from the canyon floor.

The hiker suffered multiple minor injuries, but is expected to recover fully.
