Tourism officials say the opening of the Hilton is part of wider efforts to broaden Taupo’s appeal
By Adam Ray
The lakeside town of Taupo is a well-known holiday destination for Kiwis and backpackers alike, but it is hoping to attract another kind of tourist.
Taupo’s mayor says the opening of a Hilton hotel in his town could attract well-heeled Americans which will help transform the local tourism industry.
Tourism officials say the hotel opening is part of wider efforts to broaden Taupo’s appeal, and it is not just Americans they want to attract.
Air New Zealand starts flights between Sydney and Rotorua next month, and Taupo’s tourism officials hope they will get a boost from the influx of trans-Tasman tourists.
The new Hilton includes renovated rooms from the historic Terraces Hotel, and mayor Rick Cooper says a new hotel could even be used as a base by a major rugby team during the next World Cup.
