I agree with John C these kneejerk Demolitions are totally wrong and unjustifiable. If you ask me the earthquake is merely being used as an excuse to tear down heritage buildings. The City Council has stated that no buildings should be torn down without their approval. Obviously many building owners cant wait and wont wait and as such are using the whole earthquake thing as a covininant scapegoat.
