The father of a man killed in a hit and run crash after a family wedding is looking forward to facing his son's alleged killer in court.

William Hoskins, 26, from Hastings, was found barely breathing by a passing motorist just 150 metres from the Cambridge wedding venue about 4:30am on Sunday.

He died soon after paramedics arrived at the scene.

Mr Hoskins had been at the wedding of his cousin, Erin Hoskins, to Oliver Cameron before his death.

A 47-year-old Hamilton man handed himself in to police on Monday and was charged with careless driving causing death.

He will appear in the Hamilton District Court on Friday.

Mr Hoskins' father, Greg Hoskins, told the New Zealand Herald a large group of relatives would also be at court.

"I want to see his face ... my son was a legend and his life has been snuffed out.

"There will be over a hundred foot soldiers that will show up, not a problem."

He said police told the family the driver had allegedly stopped after hitting William and removed a piece of damaged bumper, before driving off.

Mr Hoskins did not know why his son was on the road at that hour, but believed he may have been trying to get back to his motel.

The family planned to take William's body back to Hastings for a tangi, beginning later this week.
