It has been revealed the bodyguard who escorted Sir Peter Jackson on the red carpet at the premiere of The Hobbit last week had failed a criminal history check and should not have been granted a security licence.

Thomas Andrew Gibson was due to appear in the Wellington District Court today on assault charges, but the case was thrown out.

Gibson was also with Sir Peter and Elijah Wood at a Hobbit costume party last Monday. 3 News was on the receiving end when we tried to ask Wood a question, Gibson showing us the door.

He applied to the Private Security Personnel Licensing Authority for a certificate of approval to undertake security work in October.

The Ministry Of Justice says Gibson was issued a temporary certificate while his application was being considered. When the ministry realised he had failed the criminal history check, they cancelled his certificate. Unfortunately, it had already been mailed to him.

Gibson was due to appear in the Wellington District Court today on a charge of common assault, but the charge was dropped.

"The police elected not to offer any evidence whatsoever, you should ask them why they made that decision – they obviously had very good reasons for that," says Gibson's lawyer Andrew Davie.

3 News is waiting to hear from the police for their side of the story.

Phil McCarthy is correct regarding Thomas Andrew Gibson (Andrew Gibson), a little research via the Internet on GOOGLE, New Zealand Companies Office and New Zealand Insolvency Services(managing bankruptcy) clearly shows an individual with a lack of professionalism and any respect for the law and security licencing authority (justice department). There is also an obvious connection between Jamie Hood Wilson of Chameleon Events and Gibson with Wilson having been a former business partner of Gibson Hospitality Group and an historic connection with Gibson Security. The search of the companies office website clearly shows a perceived change of ownership of Gibson Security Limited to David Wilson who I also learnt in an old friend of Andrew Gibson and clearly a staunch supporter (why? best only known to himself). So, Andrew Gibson becomes bankrupt due to poor financial and business decisions and moves the company over to David Wilson and is then insolvent (bankrupt), he's clearly not a cleaver man as the trail is obvious. Lets hope for the good of the public, that Andrew Gibson is never granted a security licence, regardless, I'm sure he will always be playing in the shadows!

Thomas Andrew Gibson / Andrew Gibson is clearly an undersirable individual to have working in any capacity within the security game, clearly Gibson's desire to manipulate the security licensing authority by not declaring his crimininal convictions, he knowingly did this and would have been aware a security licence would not have been granted. As for Jamie Wilson of Chameleon Events, his so called "security checks" is laughable considering he knows of Gibson's criminal history and past as his former business partner with the Gibson Hospitality Group, if Wilson hasn't been called to account for his lack of professionalism and dishonesty by weta and Sir Peter Jackson then he should be! Maybe both Gibson and Wilson should keep in mind how small Wellington really is!

Well done to Mark and the team! Gibbo (Andrew Thomas Gibson/Andrew Gibson), you must have known you wouldn't get away with this, tidy up your act! Did you learn your lesson? There's a great suggestion on here about attending a non-violence course, probably a good time to get rid of the chip off your shoulder, do it and snap out of your criminal network if your serious about being a good security guard? personal protection is for the licensed professionals. You knew you wouldn't get a licence, I'm sure you'll be making a come back in one form or another, but know that we will be watching! you've burnt too many people! This is a new start of a chapter we are dedicating to you. Some personal advice, get onto a weight loss programme, your a heart attack waiting to happen!

CC do you really think this guys is capable of protecting anyone? No profession security organisation in the world would deploy someone so unfit in as many ways as Mr Gibson.

Finally Thomas Andrew Gibson (Andrew Gibson) is exposed! I hope he learnt his lesson, I'm sure he will be back in one form or another. Watching him in front of the worlds media is an embarrassment to the NZ security industry, not only should he get professional help for his tendency to physical assault people but perhaps undertake a health check and consider a weight loss programme. Possibly too a living without violence programme is appropriate? As for David Wilson and Jamie Wilson, you wouldn't need to carry out to much research to see the historic connections between the three, after the justice department has finished, perhaps the insolvency/official assignees office may take a look at Gibson.

The law is the law, read the article carefully in the dominion post and you will see that Andrew Gibson failed to disclose his criminal history, does the security industry really want people of his calibre in the industry? I think not.

Interesting that the person/event company who contracted him was the GM of Mr Gibson's hospitality business that went bankrupt for $2m
