The cost of two exxtra holidays a year would be $400 million, the Government says (file)

The Government is going to shoot down a Labour bill to "Monday-ise" ANZAC Day and Waitangi Day when they fall on a weekend.

David Clark's bill didn't get to its first reading vote on Wednesday night but when it does it will be defeated.

He argued that workers deserved the holidays they were denied when ANZAC Day and Waitangi Day fell on a weekend and said they should be carried over to the following Monday.

National's David Bennett said ANZAC Day wasn't going to fall on a weekend until 2015 and Waitangi Day wouldn't until 2016.

"Both of them won't fall on a weekend until 2021, let's be practical about this," he said.

"The National Party is unable to support this bill at this stage."

The Labour Department has previously said the economic cost of two extra public holidays would be about $400 million.

National's support party, ACT, strongly opposes Labour's bill and the Government will have the numbers to defeat it when it goes to a vote in about three weeks.

Is this all the Labour party think tank can come up with at this time????. If it was a good idea - why didnt they just monday-ise these holidays when they had 9 years in Government?????
