It is looking increasingly likely that rebel MP Hone Harawira will resign from the Maori Party.

After a hui yesterday, Mr Harawira said he was confident his future lies with the party, but 3 News understand he has now changed his mind.

Buddy Mikaere, former director of the Waitangi Tribunal and the one on the end of Mr Harawira’s expletive-ridden tirade says it is definitely time for the MP to go.

“I’d like to see him resign, but I don’t think he will.”

After Thursday night’s hui, Mr Harawira was confident he would stick with the Maori Party.

“There are issues that we need to resolve within the caucus and within the party, but I have no doubts that that’s where my future lies,” Mr Harawira said.

“If they lose Hone, I think they’ll begin to lose a bit of a connect with the grassroots and that’s not going to be a good thing over the long term,” said Awiri Taonui, head of Maori Studies at Canterbury University.

“They’ve got to sit down with the guy and sort him out.”

The president of the Maori Party released a statement saying they hope to continue to work cooperatively with Hone in the House, as an independent MP.

Mr Taonui says that’s indicative of deeper rifts in the party that go right back to the coalition deal made with National.

“There’s a little bit of tension in there and Hone’s not completely happy.”

Mr Tikaere says two weeks to decide is a long time in parliament.

“Who knows what might happen in the interim.”

In addition to what I have already said I think the fact that NZ wants Hone to appologies for what he said and how he said it is one thing then to harbour two thieves in the house with portfolios ie Bill English and Rodney Hide in my view is racist at its worst or ignorant at its best.

Look at history, and currently the theft of the foreshore seabed, No representation on the Super City, etc.

In fact why dont you all get informed about the Magna Carter, Contra Preferendum, Sovereign Nations and Treaties. You might find the read enlightning.

Dont p...s Te Taitokerau off because they have the very documents that could take all of NZ to the International Courts ignite the role of the Governor General you see we had no say in the deminishment of his role, he is the face for the Queen and we will demand him back in his rightfull position.

Maori are a poison chalis to the lies and theif over the years so Joris De Bre take Hone to the cleaners please give Te Taitokerau their day in court, infact Make our DAY!
I wont be surprised if you dont run with this. expected

Isnt it funny how those who have recieved the benefits of Hones comments on stolen from maori since time in memorial -well since they have been here dear to charge him a racist. The truth never sits pretty with the the ones who built their existence on a lie the truth hurts Well Hone Buddy aint worth your spittle. He has almost sucessfully distroyed the only platform that Maori have to get things done> Well done Buddy if the party falls to piece I would like you to explain to my moko and my whanau why you have done this. You appear to be an intelligent man yet your act to get Hone has and will impact on the future generations, just because you got info off Hones Website and sqeeled to the media, "OH BECAUSE HE TOLD YOU TO" If Hone said for you to hand in your job, jump of a cliff, or go and front up to his electorate .WOULD YOU? or are you a coward BUDDY.

Hei Hone,
You departure is:
1.Good for the nation to re-build peace between maoris & pakehas.
2.Good for maoris as a community to build a peaceful lifestyle.
3.Good for the maori party to re-unite and work as a team (as you weren't a team player).
4.Good for the parliamentarian as they don't need put up with your childish comments.
5.Good for the media too as they don't have to waste their time & resources trying resolve your crap.

Isn't there a more serious question that needs to be asked(are "pakeha" still ripping off "maori land")?, can anyone answer that with all honesty?. Also too make the analogy that "maori" were just like the europeans in stealing land of other tribes is a "joke". It is a fact that most of the coloniser's are of "european" descent?,doesnt that say something.

I hope Hone Harawira resigns - it is ashame that the Maori Party would not make the decision to sack him - they obviously share his views - which is a bit disturbing - I have no doubt that Hone has done some wonderful things for Maori - but his attitude and disrespect towards certain ethnic groups in NZ has put his position as an MP in jeopardy - I hope Hone does the right thing and resigns

He should resign, he has done immeasurable harm to the party and the maori cause. As an independant he can see how popular his rants are and then see how many votes he can garner. He will get the radicals but just how many are there? He is a disenchanted man speaking out of time (well in the past anyway) Time to bury the past and get on with the future which I suspect the Maori Party is trying to do.

i dont think Hone should go.His electorate covers a big area of Aotearoa. They should sit down one more time(maori party) and yes sort out his behavior and foul language. He is still a key player and is a popular MP regardless of his upfront and no mincing with words attitude. Good Luck Hone
