Parents are being warned they may face serious consequences if not supervising their children after several children in Hamilton were arrested over the weekend.

Police say the incidents serve as a timely reminder to parents and caregivers of their supervisory responsibilities.

"On Friday night an 11-year-old and a 13-year-old were aprpehended after breaking into an industrial yard, while another 13-year-old and 14-year-old were arrested after being caught shoplifting in a City Warehouse store," says Hamilton City Area Commander Inspector Rob Lindsay.

He says detectives found a group of 13 and 14-year-olds had robbed another child of their sweets when responding to an aggravated robbery.

Mr Lindsay said the latest incident went beyond common bullying.

"There has been a number of such cases reported lately that go beyond schoolyard stand-overs or bullying. Parents and caregivers need to understand that  under the Children, Young Persons and their Families Act, not only can the children face court action - so can the parents," he says.

Mr Lindsay says parents need to know where their kids are and who they are with, and take steps to stop trouble before their behaviour deteriorates to such a degree that police become involved.

If parents find their children mixing with the wrong crowd, they should take steps to address it and seek help, he says.

What a great country we are in! Parent can't smack their children for wrong doing, but the parent can be smacked for the wrong doing of their children.

It's about time, we the parents are responsible for our child/rens behaviour, where-abouts etc no matter what the law says. The Children, Young Persons and their Families Act, needs to be promoted in a positive way. I also think if a child were to get into trouble with the police or other authorities it would be wise for the Court to give the parent/s a warning, a copy of The Children, Young Persons and their Families Act, and a Court order for the parent/s to undergo a parenting programe. The child should also be made to take responsibility for his/her actions as the Court deems appropriate. If the childs behaviour is beyond parental or Court Order control then I would recommend a form of BOOTCAMP. Our children are so out of control these days and something needs to be done to put an end to this error.

I actually disagree with that. Yes it is our responsibility as a parent but these days with the anismaking law there is no way you coul discipline. So tell me how would you like us to discipline, cos my way of discipline would be to beat them up so it stops them from doing what they do. And most of the time parents cant be on look out for the kids 247. I think that if the child out and about doing things they know they shouldnt be doing the blame shouldnt fall on the parents.

Take the parents to court! they are responsible for their
offspring; as the saying goes; the fruit doesn't fall far from the tree.

Maybe parents are not aware of the law or aware of their children's behaviour out there in the comminity..If not listerning, send the parents a court order to disapline there children otherwise the court would take action agaisnt the parents..
