A trio who rode a chilly bin down Dunedin’s famously steep Baldwin St say they have no regrets, and are even planning their next escapade.

They have been charged with disorderly behaviour and dangerous driving after they were caught dragging the chilly bin – complete with rider – behind a car through town early Sunday morning.

One of the men, a 22-year-old student, would not be identified, but admitted the stunt was all his idea.

“Saturday night bender turned sour – pubs shutting early, nothing to do, small town syndrome,” he says.

The three men started by towing the chilly bin, and rider, around the Octagon behind their car, then they headed for Baldwin St, where just eight years ago another student was killed after trying to ride down in a wheelie bin.

But the similarities are lost on this thrill seeker.

“I guess you can compare the material it is made out of but the wheel structure and the speed a wheelie bin would reach going down there is obviously considerably a lot faster than that,” he says.

The men will be appearing before a judge later this week.

Just why have they been charged? Who are the victims? What they did was stupid but a crime...perhaps only in NZ, where high jinx are not tolerated and crimminal records are dished out like sports trophies. NZ loves to pay lawyers judges and the police instead of protecting their young people. Hardly the crime of the century!! Young guys do stupid things, perhaps it would have been more fitting for them to sweep Baldwin St for a week!!

This sounds like the copycat antics of Back of the Y. Didn't TV3 broadcast this show a few years back?

I can't believe that a news program which, I imagine wants to be taken seriously would even give these immature little idiots air time. All you are doing is encouraging this pathetic behavior. Shame on you 3 news.

they sound like candidates for the Darwin Awards - which is awarded to people like these guys - they would improve the species by removing themselves from it!
