Labour leader Phil Goff is being accused of playing the race card after saying the Government made shabby, cynical deals with the Maori Party to get the emissions trading scheme through Parliament.

He used the term "pork bone politics" to describe negotiations he said took place in secret and favoured big Maori corporates.

"We can choose our future based on principle and with the interests of all New Zealanders at heart," he told a Grey Power meeting in Palmerston North.

"Or we can have a country where one New Zealander is turned against another, Maori against Pakeha, in a way that Labour strongly rejects."

But the Maori Party said it was Mr Goff who was being racially divisive.

"The messages Labour is sending out are dangerous," said MP Rahui Katene.

"It is clear that Labour is running a campaign to divide Maori and Pakeha."

Ms Katene said Labour was telling Maori media that the Maori Party "got peanuts" in the ETS deal, while it told mainstream media the Government gave away too much.

"Mr Goff is doing his hardest to polarise the public into attacking Maori through launching a misguided campaign that Maori are getting special treatment when they are not," she said.

The Labour leader also criticised the Government for reviewing the Foreshore and Seabed Act, which is part of National's support agreement with the Maori Party.

He said the Act was being cynically re-opened for political purposes.

"It's hard to see why the country should be put through all the grief just to put a new brand on law that's working," he said.

That appeared to contradict a statement issued in July by Labour's Maori affairs spokesman Parekura Horomia and shadow attorney-general David Parker.

"National's change of heart has established an opportunity to revisit the Act," they said.

"Labour accepts the current legislation needs amendment."

Maori Party co-leader Pita Sharples said Mr Goff didn't have the right to even talk about the legislation, which was enacted by the previous government.

"It's a very desperate move...let's hope he doesn't stir up something when there's nothing there," Dr Sharples said.

Senior cabinet minister Gerry Brownlee said Mr Goff's speech was ridiculous.

"It's a masterpiece of confusion and hypocrisy...he's decided there are several pardes in town and he's going to wave a flag at each of them and see whether anyone notices."

Ive been a Labour supporter for the last 3 elections, but will never vote for them again as long as Phil is party leader. This speech was aimed at all the rednecks in NZ, and they are sucking it up. Why does Phil say Maori and Pakeha? There are other people in NZ if you havent noticed. It should be Maori and New Zealanders. This is him trying to divide Maori and Pakeha, trying to get "Pakeha" supporters. Fueling the fires that already exist. Flip Flop Phil is just DESPERATE. Dont fall for his childish tricks.

Phil Goff is just telling the truth.. many pakeha that I know are angry about the deal done with Maori over the ETS.

If you read the ETS news stories you can see that many europeans were voicing their disgust at the concessions being given.

Because quite rightly, the ETS is supposed to affect us all equally, but it doesnt.

Maori make huge profits out of it, by being able to use conservation land to plant and harvest trees.

All these people blaming the man for speaking the truth, and thats what it is.. the truth.

When I heard that Maori were considering taking the government to court because their land wasnt supposedly worth as much anymore, I knew for some Maori it wasnt about getting the land back or restoring mana it was about how much money they could get for their claims and that was it.

A deal is a deal, except when you are some rich Maori looking for more.

What a joke, Phil Goff looked so bored giving that speech to the seniors. This is a bad move for Goff, it comes across as pure desperation. Yes, the race card worked for Winston and Don. Whatever Winston Peters did, he did with flair and style. That's what people liked about him, he was a showman. Don Brash was successful because Labour was arrogant and dropping in the polls. He looked and sounded like a leader, where as Helen was looking tired. Wrong speech, wrong audience, wrong timing. I note flip flop Phil has changed his mind about the foreshore and seabed act.

Phil Goff is a tool! he has done nothing for the Labour party thus far apart from bag the National government, who is trying it's best to clean up a lot of the mess the Labour Government left behind. He keeps making an idiot of himself Phil Goff should really get a public speaker aid or find a new one. It wont be so much "Bushisms" anymore, more like "Goffisms" Face the facts Goff you will never be Prime Minister of this country. Quit While you down your just making yourself look more and more like a playground tattle tale that no body wants to play with.
