TVNZ Breakfast host Paul Henry is back in hot water after referring to intellectually-disabled Britain's Got Talent star Susan Boyle as "retarded".

On Monday morning's show, Henry read from a magazine article about the Scottish singer, laughing as he described how she was "starved of oxygen" at birth and suffered an intellectual disability, The Dominion Post reported.

"Here's the really interesting revelation: she is in fact retarded ...

"And if you look at her carefully, you can make it out," he said.

IHC New Zealand spokeswoman Philippa Sellens said it was "highly offensive" that Henry referred to Boyle as retarded.

"It was in extremely bad taste to use his position as a broadcaster to 'entertain' by mocking a sector of the community that has difficulty speaking up for themselves."

IHC had had "a massive response" and was encouraging the public to complain to TVNZ and the Human Rights Commission.

TVNZ spokeswoman Megan Richards said she was unable to comment on the complaints as they were "going through the usual process".

The Broadcasting Standards Authority found Henry had breached standards of good taste, decency and fairness after he read viewer comments that a female guest, Greenpeace worker Stephanie Mills, had a moustache.

He then added his own comments, while his co-host Alison Mau pleaded with him to stop.

"That was a moustache on a lady," he said. "People can say what they see, it's television isn't it?"

There's just no getting away from the fact that you Mr Henry are one sick puppy. Here we have another in a long line of disrespectful indeed outrageous comments that has dogged your career over recent years. The tragedy is that you actually have a modicum of talent and so clearly wasted with you penchant for such verbal diarrhea. What about respect? What about care for your fellow humans? The really sad thing is that you will most likely think that this and similar comments here is also - funny. Who's the retard?

So its ok for you to be disrespectful but not Paul?

I understand you being upset but your opinion doesn't count for any more or less than anyone elses. Sure it was in poor taste, but he should still be able to express an opinion. Your opinion is you don't like what he said, Pauls was she looked retarded. You can't take away his right to an opinion because you don't like it. Most people are respectful of someones unfortunate position and the Majority if allowed to just get on with it will help correct him without these silly 'Human Rights' people getting involved.

Shame on you Paul. But you are right, and I think you are great to listen to even if I don't always agree, at least you spark debate.

Dear mister paul (lower-case intentional),

In April 2007, my second son, Harry, suffered oxygen deprivation in the hours before birth. He was in neonatal intensive care for several weeks and received specialist medical and therapy care for 18 months. My wife and extended family went through much hell.

In a follow-up to your "ribald, witty and slapstick" mocking behind the camera lens last week, I challenge you to:

1. Visit us at our home in Christchruch and tell us to our faces that our son is retarded.

2. Have a good look at our son (perhaps with breakfast TV cameras present) and declare - entertainingly - to the NZ public that, "gee whizz everybody.... if you look carefully enough, you can see the retardation in this little boy too !"

3. Then go to Scotland and have a chat with Susan Boyle about her "retardation" and her "retarded" appearance.

Please come and visit. Please do... you coward.

Best regards,

Jonathan Baggaley

Paul. I have watched you for a while now most mornings and must admit, for the most part, do find your dry whit quite amusing.I am, however, not surprised that you find yourelf in boiling water over this one. You seem quit intelligent and articulate yourself most admirably. The verbal agilility you display while tackling most issues political and social is equally so. But unfortunately you lack a graciousness which accompanies most people of your age, intellect and experience. I can only guess that you failed miserably at drama or politics and enjoy the current occuaptional benefits to express your opinion in any way you see fit. I have heard you once say that it wouldnt matter how we discribed certain political process's to newzealanders as 1/3 of them would understand it anyway. THis and other comments need to kept in a place where you can whisper it first and keep it until the folowing day to shine some common sense on it. Maybe recruit Ali, as Pippa is unfortunately just as inept, unless idle vacant pouting mid interview is a highly valued attribute for the modern day NZ TV host .I would love the opportunity to sit on tv and point out your ubiquitously obvious shortcomings, but see no point. Do you understand?..there is no point . Hence I will keep it to myself. Go Paul ...trust me , practice makes perfect. I will be watching.....

Do you all not know where the off button is on your tv!? For crying out loud turn it off if you dont like it. Paul Henry says it like it is. Jealous that you can not speak your mind? Some people "think" like Paul Henry only he "thinks" it and then it passes his lips. Paul & Pippa - the highlight of the morning before work!

Who's Paul Henry anyway?? His popularity is nothing compared to Boyle. Just a minor player whose existence most people have no interest in at all.

how insensitive of all of you. he was trashing her. calling her names. it's easy to throw out the name retard or retarded. I'm meaning, they are second class citizens anyway, right? who is going to stand up for them? Certainly not you losers. The sad truth in life that unless you have a family member with special needs the rest of you just don't get it. You say it's just a word, or what's the big deal, you think it's about being p.c. Nothing is further from the truth. It's about having a little dignity for a population of people just doing the best they can. How sad that for most of you are jealous of Susan's success. you think mocking her is your only way of showing contempt. Shameful.
