Imagine being able to take your Christmas holiday this year in a luxury lodge that you are the proud new owner of.

For someone, that very thing is on the cards.

A wealthy recluse is giving away an iconic mountain house nestled on the slopes of Mt Taranaki in New Zealand's oldest national park.

The donor is German landowner Karl Reipen, and he came to us at Campbell Live to help him find the right recipient.

He wants to hear from individuals, artists, charities and trusts who could use a 10-bedroom hotel situated in pristine alpine forest.

He and a team will consider proposals, make a decision and then the lodge will be donated.

So who is this media-shy philanthropist, Mr Reipen?

A world away from Europe's autobahns, Mr Reipen found his slice of heaven bordering 6km of remote beach south of Waitomo.

He originally planned to leave it to the people of New Zealand in his will, but having a quadruple heart by-pass operation changed his mind - he's going to give it away now.

You can submit your proposal by writing to: The Mountain House, PO Box 303, Stratford, Taranaki.

We'll announce the winner early next year.

This is an amazing oppertunity, despite what we do in the past and what we cannot take back we can still make up for by giving and what a gift to the deserving. i believe this could be operated in verious ways,

I have lived in taranaki in the past for 5 years in the hopitality industry and been to this mountain house a few times also snowboarding up there and have a good understanding on what its all about.

It could be utalized for the mountain goers during season, a nite out for resraurant goers all year round, but also to serve the NZ and its community by offering a P/methamphetamine rehabilitation facility offering a program that works.
This place would offer the attributes needed for such a facility...
-Detox, isolation.
-Physiological needs food, warmth, shelter, relaxing environment.
-Safety needs, Secure environment, Drug Education
-Social needs - affiliation and acceptance, local activities and team building.
-Esteem Needs – self respect, approval from family and others
-Self actualization needs, ethics, values, self fulfillment,
-Introduction to work force (benificial to local Businesses)

Our needs are aroused in a specific order, lower order needs must be met before higher order needs can be triggered.

My philosophy is to give honest, caring and knowledgeable advice, support and referrals according to their unique circumstance.

Goals

•Help drug addicts and families through rehabilitation
•Decrease drug use in NZ
•Decrease crime rates
•Bring family’s together
•Create hope
•Increase local business activities
•Create a standard therapy for this addiction
•Donating to local community drug and alcohol abuse centers
And help lines

Apart from the accommodation and food the clients would also be
Taken on field trips to participate in local adventure attractions such as
River rafting, swimming, water sports, mountain sports, restaurants, Horse riding etc this would also bring year round business to the local Community’s.

The tourist attraction could still be available in season, and wineing and dinning all year round do not have to stop.

Its possible that a unit or two can also be used for free accomadation for organisations like st johns and cancer foundations volinteers etc as a holiday retreat.

Meth / P is fast becomming a major problem in new zealand and if nothing is done we will all suffer!

Good luck to all that apply and may the best proposal win :-)

This gift is truely amazing. I am going to register just for the hell of it. Whoever has the right will win because they deserve it. I can only make it the gift that keeps giving, I beleive its enough. Good luck to us all.

For our family and friends Maunga Taranaki is a sacred place. Whilst we have visited the Mountain House, it is surprising that our family- who live in Taranaki have never been. We have lived in the UK for the past 4 years and enjoy snow and the chilly air on a regular basis it would be awesome for local whanau to be able to experience a local and learning gift which is right on the back door! (Sorry but we could not partake- Scotland is a bit of a distance!)

Kia Ora every one. Isnt this awesome! The kaupapa is giving. Karl Reipen has decided to give like all us in Aotearoa know we do daily! (but do not do it as much because our finds are limited or none lol) I say this with a big smile as I have a organisation in need of this house he is giving! It is called Aro Ha Mamaku. I have written my letter. I hope I have a shot. I have an idea to you could benefit alot of people. and I have two of them. I am Tangata whenua of this land. I whakapapa through one of my lines of decent to all the main waka that travelled to AOtearoa many years ago. I feel this man is good and is kiwi as! Karl Reipen who I hope I meet! He knows the kaupapa of NZ. Awhi/Tautoko! Hes got enough money hes just trying to give back to the people. Kia ora to that! This is for us! Anyone in NZ! We are Mummys, daddys, kids, auntys uncles do this for us no matter who or what colour you wear on the outside! (parents in the home dealing with diagnosis and all of lifes test). I have two hearing impaired children and boy have i had a journey (even though it has only begun) trying to find good service providers in the health and education systems in place in our society! They are out there people! We have started this project from our normal family structures and as whaea Tungia Kaihau says "our whakapapa or our lines of descent" I have learnt through my nana Emare Nikora who has just received the QSM medal for service to her community.
Through her and my kool whanau (which is big as i am Maori and we know our whakapapa!). If you want to know more just look at your own self and what your life experience has been so far? Facebook Aro Ha Mamaku and leave us a message. please do as I realise that my journey has blessed me with the chance to network through my whanau in good support services to help chidren with disability! We just want to pull all these in place as parents in the home who's child has been recently diagnosed have got a lot going on in their heads!

Yea I agree, why should just one family benefit when a whole lot of people can. The place should def be used in order to do good in the community.

I believe The Mountain House should be given to someone who will use it to make a real difference in many lives. I do not think it should be given to just one family or individual.

Give it away yes. But let the people of Stratford have some say, after all it is the "Stratford" mountain house. We don't want outsiders telling us whats best for this iconic building. Is there anyone from Stratford on this selection panel who is making the decision for its future.

After living in the hot climate of aussie for a while and growing up on the doorstep of this brilliant mountain and national park, I think it would one of the most special places to live and re develop. Sounds like there are some great ideas out there. Good luck to those who win it. But remember the mountain is a place to respect.
