Tony Veitch, the high-profile sports broadcaster convicted of assaulting his girlfriend, returns to the radio airwaves next year.

Veitch will return in the role of a sports-news bulletin presenter and journalist for NewstalkZB and Radio Sport early in January, Radio Network general manager talk radio Bill Francis said in a statement today.

In the statement Veitch said he was "incredibly grateful to The Radio Network for giving me this opportunity to get back to doing what I love, and the only career I've known."

He said many things had changed in the past 18 months, but his passion for sport remained the same and he had missed it desperately.

Veitch was dumped by both Radio Sport and Television New Zealand in July last year after news broke he had assaulted his girlfriend, Kristin Dunne-Powell

He admitted charges of reckless disregard causing injury and in the Auckland District Court was sentenced to 300 hours community service, nine months supervision and ordered to attend a programme directed by his probation officer aimed at stopping violence.

He was fined $10,000. He had earlier paid $150,000 in reparation to Ms Dunne-Powell.

Come on guys, why so harsh? As a woman, I'd be the first one to condemn what he did, and I'm not one that would easily forgive either.. but when you look at it, Tony Veitch has done pretty much EVERYTHING possible to redeem himself, he did counselling and everything. Of course the "hush money" makes everything look incredibly dodgy - but let's not forget - she accepted the money and agreed to to the terms - if she wanted to tell the police, she would have - and coincidentally the news breaks at the height of his career. If I was him I would have asked for my money back! In any case, yes he made a HUGE mistake and has paid dearly for it, but if we can't at least give him another shot at building up his life again, well.. I just don't think that's right. Everyone deserves a second chance.

TRN asked some public and sportspeople what they thought of TV returning to air .. I wonder if they paid his victim the same courtesy? Did he do the anti violence course recommended by the Judge? Do we know he is in anyway reformed to be back on our media? Given he lied about the charges, the celebrity references and set a nasty PR campaign against his ex to discredit her is he really the best we can do for a spokesperson in this country?

This is typical NZ Justice, beat the crap out of someone, and then get rewarded with a high paying job. Hello Banana Republic.

Oh great, like we really missed him?

He can never, ever undo what he did.

This guy really annoys me as a presenter. He's too opinionated. Forces his hand too much and doesn't listen to other people. No wonder why he smashed his girlfriend. Seems like the girlfriend took a big chunk of his cash which is good though. Doesn't change what he done. Hopefully he's able to show more humility and listen while he's broadcasting this time round.

He can do for sports journalism what Bernie Madoff did for investing. What prudent management. Call it death knells for jock douchebags and cheerleader fraternity, their brains have finally been digested by their own asses.

Am delighted, and I wish Tony all the very best. I will now tune into the station as I really enjoy his enthusiasm.
