It's like a scene from the Tom Hanks movie The Terminal. But in this real-life drama, an immigration battle has left a man, who wants to get back to Wellington, stranded and living inside Los Angeles Airport.
He has been stuck there since Christmas.
Mike Dermatidis has lived in Wellington for six years, but immigration officials say he is not welcome. Australian customs refused to let him fly to New Zealand on Christmas Day. He was prevented from making the last leg of the journey because he didn't have a return ticket out of New Zealand.
By the time it was organised and a new flight booked it was too late. His transit time in Australia was up and Mr Dermatidis was on the next flight back to LA.
An adoptive family in Wellington have taken him in, given him food, shelter and odd jobs to keep him busy while he waits for a work permit.
When Judy Pore went to meet Mr Dermatidis at Wellington Airport on Christmas Day, the only present she got was his luggage.
"He's a good friend, he's like a family… he's done a lot for us here, and I don't think it's fair to put a person through all that," she says.
Comparisons are already being drawn between Mr Dermatidis and Tom Hanks' character in The Terminal, who, caught up in bureaucratic limbo, takes up residence in JFK Airport.
But there is concern the real-life events may not have the same happy ending.
"My main worry is New Zealand immigration," says Ms Pore. "You know whether they're going to turn him away again, and throw him on the streets again, 'cause he's got nobody. He's got a family here, he's got a home."
After his story appeared on an American news network, a man bought Mr Dermatidis a return flight to New Zealand. He is supposed to arrive on Thursday.
Immigration says Mr Dermatidis has been living in New Zealand illegally for the past six years, and does not have a visa.
