A Wanganui teenager, who can't afford a $2500 vet bill, says he will go to jail rather than give up his injured dog.

Bronson Stewart, 18, has kidnapped Buck, a five-month-old pup, who was hit by a speeding car two weeks ago from the vet clinic where he was taken with a seriously broken back leg.

The Wanganui Chronicle reported that Bronson Stewart said the vet had told him and his father Kevin that Buck's leg could be saved by having it pinned back together at a cost of $2500, or the leg could be amputated for $800.

But the two beneficiaries are not able to come up with that sort of money.

The best they could do was offer the vet $5 a week, which was declined. The vet also refused to return the pup because the little dog was in pain, Bronson said.

He said that when the vet realised the Stewarts could not pay he told them Buck would be euthanased yesterday.

But Bronson was not giving up so easily.

"I just knew I had to get my dog back. He's like my brother. I need to have him. They can't just kill him because I haven't got any money," Bronson said.

While his father sat vigil every morning out on the roadside with placards asking for the public's help, Bronson went to the veterinary clinic last Friday and asked if he could see Buck for a little while.

"They were really nice and let me go out to the cages to see him. So I opened his cage, pulled Buck out, and ran as fast as I could out of the vets and down the road. I think one of them chased me for a while, and I carried Buck home."

Yesterday an SPCA inspector arrived on the doorstep, he said.

A written SPCA report headed To Prevent or Mitigate Suffering says: "Black and white dog has dislocated and fractured right hind leg as per vet report. Dog must have immediate veterinary treatment or must be euthanased. If you don't comply you may face prosecution."

But Bronson won't give up the fight.

"I'll just be prosecuted, then. I'll go to jail if I have to. I don't want Buck killed. He's a really nice dog and I love him like a brother."

Kevin Stewart invited all animal-loving citizens of Wanganui to help him with my son's plight.

"This puppy is not in any pain to need any drugs at present while we try to raise the $800 for his amputation or the $2500 to pin his leg back together as suggested by the capitalist [vet] and the SPCA."

@freckle: It's not as simple as "if you can't afford an animal, don't have one. I'm a firm believer in the equality of all living creatures and yet there are some situations where affordability has nothing to do with it. Take my story - we had this exact same situation, only our bill was close to $4000, and that was the cheaper option! I have had my cat since I was 18 (I'm 31 this year) and he is a loved family member. Yet because of my disability and a huge decrease in my Invalid's allowance, I was unable to afford the vet bill incurred when he was mauled by the neighbour's dog (they aren't going to pay us and there is no legal recourse in New Zealand). We were saved from bankruptcy in the 11th hour by a family member. Could you take my cat away whom I love and cherish and is as much a family member as my two children just to avoid a horrible but completely unforeseeable situation? It is grotesquely unfair that in New Zealand humans can walk into a hospital and get any and all attention they need and yet other animals get put down just because their owners can't afford to foot a HUGE bill when other animals are just as capable of feeling pain and living life through experiences and emotion as humans are. As such, I plan to help found an organisation to help animals in this situation. Please look up "Raiden Three-Legged Lolcat" on Facebook to keep posted on this. If you can lend your help and support in this endeavour, we would appreciate it greatly!

What a we teaching this 18 year old beneficiary?
That it is acceptable to get a pet that you can not afford to care for?
That it is responsible to have your dog wandering around so it can be hit by a car?
That it is acceptable behaviour to have treatment for something & then run away not paying?
...and finally that it is acceptable to rely on other people to pay for your dog instead of taking responsibility? Bronson - STOP relying on people to help you and take some responsibility. You cant rely on other people & their charity. I have 2 dogs and I make sure I put money away into a savings account. If I could only afford to pay $5 a week to my vet I would never of even considered taking on an animal. Poor dog!

Regardless of what they say, any living creature with a broken limb is in pain.
Dogs are well known for hiding their pain and suffering in silence, a survival technique. If you can't afford an animal don't have one. It's not a basic human right like people think it is. Good luck though on raising the money.

email the rnspca at info@rnzspca.org.nz and tell them you would like to donate to help with the dog, they are trying to find a vet who can operate on the dog and accept the payments

Good on you Bronson, you have done the right thing, not necessarily right by the letter of the law, BUT the RIGHT thing all the same, good on you.

I am a reluctant beneficiary having not been able to find work in the past few months. Not a pleasant situation to be in. My pet is oblivious to all this but still provides me with affection and devotion and in return he gets the best care I can provide. Even if that means I dont visit a GP because of cost. KIWI, KATRINA & R. As an old sailor once told me "When a ship sinks all the SCUM comes to the surface"

The point is the dog is loved and is part of their family, would you put a child down because you couldnt afford the docters bill. The poor pup deserves a chance

If you can't afford to look after an animal properly you shouldn't have it.
